Ingredients. plantain seed coat flour
Plantain is a plant native to Western Asia and has been used in Indian and Chinese folk medicine for thousands of years.
Plantain seed husks are mainly known for their digestive and laxative properties, which are due to their high water-soluble fibre content. Less well known, but for the same reason (due to the fibre), it may also have a role in lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, controlling weight and improving general well-being.
It retains its fibre content even after grinding into flour, so plantain seed coat flour has the same positive digestive benefits.
It can be used not only for digestion, but also in the kitchen as a filtering agent and stock improver due to its water retention properties.
Significance, effects:
Plantain seed coat helps prevent constipation. The water-soluble fibres bind water in the intestine and swell, increasing the pressure on the intestinal wall, causing it to move more efficiently, and also bulking up the stool. They also help reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
The fibres found in plantain seed husks are prebiotics, which feed the beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. This helps to boost the body's defences, as a healthy gut flora is one of the cornerstones of a properly functioning immune system.
In addition, fibre helps to lower blood cholesterol levels and protects blood vessels. They slow down the effect of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels, so it is also recommended to be aware of fibre intake in people with diabetes.
Plantain seed husks and fibre also help with weight loss, as the water-swollen fibre increases the feeling of fullness. In addition, the calorie content is very low, as the fibre is not absorbed in the gut and does not provide energy.
It should be noted that plantain seed husks (and all other high-fibre foods) can only be beneficial if they are accompanied by sufficient fluids. Otherwise, it will do more harm than good.
Rarely, but allergic reactions may occur after consuming plantain seed coat, as well as some unpleasant side effects such as stomach ache, accelerated bowel movements, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Uses:
Add 1 tablespoon to 1 glass of water, stir quickly, then consume immediately. Adequate fluid intake (min. 2 litres!) is important during the day! Not recommended for children under 6 years of age and in case of intestinal obstruction!
Plantain kernel meal is recommended mainly for baking and cooking. Added to breads and pastries made with reformulated or various (even gluten-free) flour blends, it helps to create a nice, loose, spongy texture. Excellent for flourless dishes (e.g. raw vegan desserts, coconut balls, reduced carbohydrate dishes), it prevents water from leaching out.
