A pleasantly aromatic but strong spice that should be used with care.
The seeds from the fruit are used dried, whole or ground. It is used as a flavouring in meat and vegetable soups, sauces, stews, potato dishes, minced meat and fish, game dishes. It can also be used in honey cakes, but in moderation as it can make the cake spicy.
It is eaten candied as a sweet and is also used to make jelly.
It is used in pastries and sweets, and is also perfect for flavouring mashed potatoes, various stews, sausages and Mediterranean, Indian and Arabic vegetable and meat dishes. You also need nutmeg for the classic béchamel sauce.
The taste is best when grated fresh on the food at the table.
It moderates acidity and improves digestion.
In folk medicine, it is used as an antacid for indigestion, as a wind-breaker, and its fatty oil is rubbed into sore body parts to treat rheumatism. Nausea can be eliminated by eating fresh nutmeg with honey. Nutmeg contains iron, which increases the number of red blood cells in the blood.
It is also a common ingredient in cough syrups.
