Product descriptions

Ingredients. 100% Black Caraway Seed (Nigella Sativa). The fruit of the highly active flower of the garden ladybird, also known as the ladybird flower, from India. May contain traces of nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds. Nigella sativa is a species of plant in the genus Nigella of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is native to western Asia and North Africa, and is also cultivated locally in central Europe. It is a very old cultivated plant, its seeds having been used in ancient times as a spice and medicine (now used only as a herb). Other names: cultivated ladysweet, black cumin, hairy candelilla, cultivated or garden candelilla, black onion seed. A close relative of the ornamental marigold (Nigella damascena) and the field ladybird (Nigella arvensis). Its seeds have a slightly oniony flavour and, when broken down, have an aroma somewhat reminiscent of pepper and pitch grass. It is used mainly in Arabic, Turkish and Indian cuisine. In the Middle East it is sprinkled on top of cakes and breads. In India, it is an ingredient of the Bengali five-spice mixture (panch phoron, ???? ?????), used to flavour dhal and chatni. It is an ingredient in Turkish mesir sweets. Its active ingredients are fatty oil, composed of linoleic acid and glycerides of oleic acid, and essential oil. It is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. It has been used as a medicine in Asia, the Middle East and Africa for centuries. It has been used to treat respiratory, stomach, kidney and liver diseases, to strengthen the circulatory and immune systems, as an anti-inflammatory, anaesthetic and anti-allergic. It is considered by Islam to be among the most potent medicinal preparations. The Prophet Muhammad is said to have once declared that black seeds are effective for all diseases except death, as one hadith states. In Central European folk medicine, it was used to treat flatulence and to increase milk production in nursing mothers. Nowadays, black cumin oil in capsule form is recommended as a dietary supplement, but the reports of its widespread medicinal properties are not scientifically substantiated.
