Product descriptions

Maize is one of the most popular cereals, consumed by many people in many different ways. Although maize is a member of the grass family, its appearance is very different from other plants in this family. Cultivated for 5-7 thousand years, it is an ancient food of the Indians. It was brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus and spread to the continent and then to Asia through the Spanish. It came to our country from Turkey. One of its important nutritional importance is its high protein and carbohydrate content. The sugar content is highest in tender maize. Its protein content is similar to that of pulses, but its fat content is four times that of green peas.

It contains a number of vitamins, especially B1, B2, B3, C and E, and therefore plays a role in the healthy functioning of the nervous system, skin protection, proper metabolism, and the maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and blood vessels. Among the minerals it contains are calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc and copper, which help to maintain optimal cardio-muscular and intestinal function. Calcium strengthens our bones, zinc strengthens our immune system and protects our skin. In our country, most traditional maize-based foods are found in the Őrség, while in Transylvania, puliszka is a popular folk food. Our grandmothers used it most often to make prose, ganica, dödolle and corn bread. As it is gluten-free, it can also be eaten by people with flour intolerance. The spices that go well with it are thyme, tarragon, rosemary and marjoram.
