Biologically active Quatrefolic® folate
The importance of folate has been recognised for over 50 years. The names folic acid and folate are often used interchangeably as synonyms for the water-soluble vitamin B9, which is essential for normal cellular function and health.
There are 4 different generations of folate compounds, ranging from folate found naturally in foods to the innovative Quatrefolic®.
Folic acid is converted into biologically active folate in a multi-step process. Since synthetic 2nd generation folic acid is an oxidised form, it must first be converted into reduced folate and only then can it perform a biological function in the human body.
Quatrefolic®, represents the fourth generation of folate, with long-term stability, excellent water solubility, increased bioavailability and safety.
Folate and MTHFR enzyme
In addition to a number of other factors (e.g. pregnancy, ageing), genetic determination plays an important role in influencing folate levels, largely due to the C677T polymorphism of the gene encoding the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme. This so-called point mutation causes an amino acid change in the enzyme that affects its function, with a 25-60% decrease in activity. According to a national representative survey in 2001, this gene mutation may affect up to 56% of the Hungarian population, leading to a decrease in the amount of active L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate in individuals with this gene mutation.
