Ginger - for upset stomach and joint pain
Ginger has long been known for its stomach-soothing properties and clinical studies have shown that ginger extract can relieve nausea following surgery and chemotherapy. In addition, due to its anti-inflammatory components (such as gingerol), ginger has shown promise in the treatment of certain cancers, as well as in alleviating muscle pain and cartilage damage.
In a recent study, people who took ginger capsules for 11 days reported 25% less muscle pain after stretching exercises than a control group receiving placebo. And another study confirmed that an injection containing ginger extract relieved knee joint pain caused by cartilage damage.
Some sources say ginger originated in India, others in China, but it is thought that the Spaniards are responsible for its spread around the world.
We are talking about a tropical plant in terms of its cultivation, and in fact it is a root that we are already holding in our hands. It takes 9-10 months to harvest after planting and is hand-harvested in most parts of the world. Usually it is dried and ground into powder after hand washing, but increasingly it is found whole in markets. There is also a crushed form, for example you can buy it at Greenmarkos. ;)
It tastes a bit like lemon and is refreshingly tangy.
It has a wide range of uses in the kitchen. It is popular as a root vegetable in quick-roasted dishes, but is also used in marinades, as a garnish on the edge of plates and bowls (even for eating), and is delicious roasted on salads. It is also used in pasta and savoury dishes. It can also be used as an accompaniment to meat dishes, pasta and as a side dish. It is also eaten as a pickle, but can also be used in biscuits, jams and even in drinks.
Medically, it aids digestion, clears the eyesight, is good against gout, and warms the joints. It improves poor circulation, helps with coughs and flu (get it quick, the viruses are with us).
Many people chew it for seasickness.
One of the ingredients in perfume.
There are also dried whole ginger root, ground ginger, pickled ginger, canned ginger, and crushed, candied ginger.
