Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an Omega-6, 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) found in breast milk and many vegetable oils. The seed oil of the sea buckthorn is considered to be a major source of gamma-linolenic acid, which is readily absorbed.

Oenothera biennis, commonly known as fallow meadow vetch, is a member of the Onagraceae family, a large, yellow-flowered biennial herb found in fields, roadsides, prairies and fallow fields (Gleason, Cronquist, 1963). O. biennis
Grows a stem rose in its first year, its first year roots are edible as a fleshy root vegetable, and it is also grown specifically for food (Elliott, 1976).
In its second year it produces large flowers which open only at night and are wonderful decorations for the home. The plants produce one or two new flowers every night (Wit, 1967).
It has been used medicinally by the Indians, and medicine and alternative medicine now know that its physiological properties are due to its valuable fatty acid content (linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid).
Some interesting facts about gamma-linolenic acid
Gamma-linolenic acid is present in our food in very small amounts. The primary and rich source of this polyunsaturated fatty acid is the oil of the seeds of the sea buckthorn. Our body can still produce gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) from linoleic acid (LA), but the conversion (conversion) is not always efficient in our body due to a lack of co-factors required for the conversion, such as B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and calcium, or due to reduced activity of the enzyme required for this (6-desaturase). The activity of the enzyme can be impaired by a number of factors such as ageing, nutrient deficiencies, trans fatty acids, hydrogenated oils and excessive alcohol consumption.
Taking all these factors into account, it is worthwhile to take care to supplement the adequate amount of gamma-linolenic acid, for example by taking dietary supplements such as Natur Tanya® LIGESTONE OIL.
