Place of origin: India
Fenugreek, also known as butterbur, is a common medicinal and herbaceous plant, mostly in India and Egypt. In our country, it is used more for medicinal purposes, which are quite varied.
It has a strong, aromatic, bitter smell, reminiscent of aniseed.
In India, it is used to spice curries and chutneys, fish, meat dishes and vegetables.
It is also used to colour cheeses and other foods because of its yellowish taste, and can be found in nut- and coffee-flavoured products such as nut substitutes.
It is used to flavour breads and teas.
As the kernel is very hard, it is difficult to grind. This is made easier by heating it first.
Fenugreek seed improves the milk supply of breastfeeding mothers. Women can benefit from fenugreek not only during breastfeeding. Some of its active ingredients are similar to the effects of natural female sex hormones, and can relieve unpleasant menstrual symptoms and menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, depression and mood swings.
Its anabolic effects are used by bodybuilders to develop muscles.
In patients with non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes, fenugreek can lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Fenugreek can also be used successfully by people who suffer from arthritis and have frequent joint pain. One of the active ingredients in fenugreek has an effect on the body's ability to heal itself and relieve pain, and other compounds in fenugreek also reduce inflammation
The seed is also used for incense.
