The main active ingredients in both Korean red ginseng and American ginseng are ginseng saponins, also known as ginsenosides. It is important to know that although Korean and American ginseng belong to the same genus, both plants have a distinctive active ingredient composition - i.e. there are many differences in the type and amount of individual ginsenosides found in each plant. Siberian ginseng does not contain any ginsenosides, but it does contain a number of other useful compounds. Eleuterosides and isofraxidine, as well as phenols and flavonoids, are also important active constituents of the root of the plant for its positive physiological effects.
Korean ginseng: what is it worth knowing?
Korean ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng (panax ginseng), is native to the mountainous regions of East Asia. Its root has been used by mankind for thousands of years. It has been used mainly to boost vitality, physical and mental performance, strengthen the immune system, support the body under stress, combat fatigue, weakness, mood problems and lack of concentration, and as a rejuvenating agent. Korean ginseng comes in three varieties: fresh, white and red. Research has shown that red ginseng has significantly higher levels of active ingredients (ginsenosides) and therefore has stronger physiological effects, but has fewer side effects than fresh or white ginseng.
American ginseng: what is it worth knowing?
Its root has been used by Native Americans, with different tribes using it for different purposes, such as strengthening the immune system and the body in general, improving mental abilities, or even treating fevers. Traditional Chinese medicine has used American ginseng for centuries to increase Qi (pronounced qi), i.e. vitality, to combat low energy levels and chronic fatigue. It is also often recommended in phytotherapy to support the immune system and reduce stress and nervousness.
Siberian ginseng: what is it worth knowing?
Siberian ginseng, also known as taiga root, although not botanically related to Korean and American ginseng, is considered a worldwide ginseng for its similar adaptogenic properties It has a history of over 2000 years in traditional Chinese medicine, but has also been used in Korean and Russian folk medicine for many centuries - for immune support, fighting infections, relieving fatigue, and improving the immune system.
