Where does the name rosehip(Rosa canina L.) come from?

The species name "canina" comes from the Latin "canis", meaning "dog". The name of this species can be attributed to the writings of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC) and the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), who suggested that a wild R. canina root preparation could be used to treat rabid dog bites. Another, and probably more likely theory, is that the species was formerly known as 'dag rose' (from the Italian daga, meaning dagger, referring to its iron spines), which was changed to 'dog rose' due to a misunderstanding.
