The importance of L-selenomethionine
There is approximately 5-15 mg of selenium in the human body. Most of this is present in muscle (50%) and in the liver, kidneys and blood plasma. The population of several European countries does not have the selenium levels required for optimal functioning of selenoproteins. Blood selenium levels (selenium adequacy) can be determined by certain methods, and the literature suggests that the optimum total selenium content in blood plasma is 80-150 μg/l, while a plasma selenium level of 90 μg/l is only achieved by L-selenomethionine intake.
The importance of BioPerine® black pepper extract
Our product has been developed to contain the maximum allowable amount of organic selenium (100 mcg) from an L-selenomethionine source. Organic selenium from L-selenomethionine has been shown to have better absorption compared to inorganic forms of selenium (sodium selenite, sodium selenate). Bioavailability and its role in nutrient absorption
The terms 'bioavailability' and 'absorption' are often used interchangeably, although they are neither synonymous nor interchangeable. It may be interesting to note that good absorption does not always lead to high bioavailability. Bioavailability is a subcategory of absorption that quantifies the proportion/fraction of a nutrient that is absorbed and available to elicit systemic effects (source: Toutain, P.
